More than 25 experts will participate in the conference to give delegates the opportunity to deepen their understanding of current thinking and new research into the causes, consequences and solutions to violence.

Joanna Wheeler is a researcher, facilitator and trainer in creative participatory processes. Over the last 10 years, Joanna has conducted more than 50 ‘storytelling for transformation’ workshops around the world, combining personal and collective forms of storytelling using drawing, drama, photography, video, audio, and sculpture. Joanna is a Senior Research Fellow in political studies at the University of Western Cape, and founding director of TransformativeStory. From 2003 to 2014, Joanna was a researcher at the Institute of Development Studies, UK, where she helped to lead the Development Research Centre on Citizenship, Participation and Accountability and worked closely with other researchers, activists and policymakers in Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Jamaica, Nigeria, Kenya, Angola, South Africa, India and Bangladesh. Joanna directed ‘Participate: Knowledge from the margins for post-2015’ from 2012 to 2014. Since 2014, she has worked with local groups in Cape Town on how to address violence. Joanna spoke at TEDGlobal in 2014 on how storytelling helps confront violence.
